ACM Employee Lends Helping Hand on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" Site
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" moved into Baltimore for the week of July 12, 2010 and ACM's Gail Nesmith jumped in to lend a hand.
"I just so happened to be on vacation that week and wanted to volunteer", said Nesmith.
ABC's popular TV show surprised a group of girls involved in the Boys Hope Girls Hope program on July 9, 2010. Ty and the "Extreme Makeover" cast announced that they would be building a home for the girls, "Extreme's" largest project yet. The home is about a block away from the boys house.
Boys Hope Girls Hope is a non-profit organization that provides at-risk youth a stable home environment while supporting and preparing them for college as well as teaching them skills to be a productive member of the community.
Through intense heat and heavy rains, volunteers worked feverishly day and night to finish the build for the big reveal. Gail, along with hundreds of other volunteers met at a nearby shopping center to board a shuttle that transported them to the build site.
"When we got there to the site, we were taken to a 'staging' area where a volunteer project manager split people into different groups where we worked on tasks that needed to be completed."
In two days of volunteering on the site, Gail helped out with numerous jobs including peeling labels off of water bottles, removing trash and debris from the work site, assembling furniture, and moving floor tiles and supplies for the contractors.
"It was neat to see all of the different contractors and volunteers, skilled and unskilled work together for such a good cause."
Along with the many contractors and volunteers, cast members from ABC's "Modern Family" and rapper Xzibit were on site to not only lend a hand, but to also motivate the workers throughout the process.
"One of the coolest things we did was we all gathered in a big group and ran up the street yelling and waving our arms with the kids from 'Modern Family' leading the pack."
Overall, the build was a huge success with lots of excitement and emotion leading up to the big reveal this past Sunday, July 19, 2010.
The episode is set to air this coming fall on ABC.
